United resumed League play on Sunday against FSC Premier (fka the Angel Wolves). The girls played well and controlled portions of the game, but could not break through the defense and score. A short while into the second half United found themselves down 2-0. After the emotionally draining loss on Saturday in their State Cup match, it would not have been surprising if the girls just didn’t have it in them to come from behind. However, this was not the case and after a slight formation adjustment and some renewed energy, United fought back and scored 3 goals in a seven minute span to take the lead. They would hold on to claim a 3-2 victory. The girls showed some great determination and strength to come from behind to win this one.
United took to the field today for the first round of State Cup. After missing out on a top 8 seed, United randomly drew the 30th seed and were matched up with the #3 seed Richmond Kickers, a team that United had defeated 1-0 in the Bethesda Thanksgiving Tournament. After a 2+ hour drive to the game, United started out a little sluggish and Richmond was able to dominate play. A quick attack up the middle gave the Kickers the lead early in the game. United started to settle in, but Richmond still dictated play for good portions of the first half. The first half ended with Richmond leading 1-0.
After a pep talk from coach Todd, United came out in the second half and turned up the intensity. They started to play much better and soon started to control the game. They spent most of the time in the attacking and and eventually were able to tie the score on a beautiful left footed flick-volley by Mara. United continued to pressure the Kickers, but were unable to capitalize on their chances and regulation ended all tied up 1-1.
United continued to pressure and dictate the game in both extra periods, but could not manage to score the winner. Richmond was able to mount an attack near the end of the second overtime period, but United was able to hold on, and the game went to penalty kicks where the Kickers were able to squeak out a 3-2 advantage and secure the victory.
After the slow start, United fought back and played some of the best soccer they’ve played in a while. It was unfortunate that these two teams had to meet in the first round, as these were clearly two of the top teams in the tournament.
